Porta del Mare is one of two remaining original entrances to the old city of Famagusta. The gate and its iron grating date back to the Venetian period. Above the gate, a marble ornament shows the emblem of the Venetian Republic - a winged lion - and the name of the gate's erector, Nicolo Prioli, including his insignia, and the year 1496.
